How to rock a casual all black outfit.

I am sitted at my friend’s balcony gazing down at this black Porsche that pulls over a few blocks away. Out comes a lady in red bottom stilletos, a tight fitting black dress and a black hat. Confident, bossy ,elegant and chic, the first four words that would best describe my first impression about her. She walks slowly making even strides down the pavement till i cannot see her anymore.

In my article about how the psychology of colours works i mentioned about black being mysterious, authoritative, formal, prestigious and elegant.

Is that reason enough to invest in black outfits?

Society has it that people who wear all black are viewed as highly emotional, slightly neurotic and have a desire to deflect what they look like in favor of who they are and what they are trying to accomplish in life.

People who wear all black often are subconsciously trying to protect themselves from feelings they think they cannot control. They are usually easily over-stimulated, and perhaps struggle to ward off anxiety and stay focused on their daily tasks. Choosing monochromatic colors creates a sense of certainty and “togetherness.”

While all the above might be the reasons why most people wouldn’t own several black pieces, the advantages are quite meritorious. Here is how,

*Offer the option of being minimalistic. Most of them look simple and stylish.

*Black is flattering. It gives the illusion of looking taller and slimmer. I mean how cool is that. On those days body positivity is fleeing from you clad yourself in all black and voila!

*Want an outfit that fits almost all occasions? Well, find the right pieces and they’ll suit weddings, dinner dates, brunch you name it.

*Black pieces are timeless. They are not confined by the seasons, colour palettes or trends.

*Black looks good on all skin tones; warm, cool or neutral

*It looks good on both men and women.

*It gives a monochromatic vibe.

Like all outfits rocking a casual black outfit needs some pointers.

1. Learn about the art of accessorizing.

Add a necklace( like i did),bangles, loop hearings for women or chains, watches, popping belts for men. This gives the outfit the edgy look .

2. Switch up your shoe color

This gives the eye a resting space. If all black is boring add a pop of colour, could be white, green, brown, grey mules.

3.Add something edgy.

What’s the first piece you notice about my outfit? I’d bet it’s the shoes. The rest do not have as much details. They give the edgy feature.

4.Pair random casual pieces.

It makes the outfit “less serious”. In this case the leather jacket does that while spicing up the outfit as well. I chose a leather handbag to match the leather jacket. Just between us leather is my favorite language. My definition of elegant and chic.

5.Show a bit of skin.

Many of us default to all-black ensembles in the winter, when we’re cocooned in as many layers as we can comfortably wear. But if the temperatures aren’t sub-zero, then you may want to break up the look by showing a little (just a little) bit of skin.

6. Add some drama to the outfit.

If an all-black outfit is starting to feel boring, a surefire way to up the ante is to add something edgier to the mix. It could be a vintage piece or something totally unexpected, could be an animal print scarf round your neck or a mustard fedora hurt anything you can get creative with.

7.Opt for fitting pieces.

Baggy clothes; this is when all you see are a pile of clothes walking on their own and you need to send out a search party to find the person within. Maybe that’s extreme but essentially, we are talking about A LOT of unnecessary room in your clothes. The type that our African mums say that we’ll grow into when we complain about them being too big.

From a personal perspective, what you wear affects how you present yourself and how you feel about yourself. You tend to act more ‘relaxed’, exhibiting a poor posture, when you wear baggy clothes since the bagginess tends to hide your form. This translates into your confidence level, making people think of you as less confident and over time, your confidence will get affected by this.

This in itself is a great reason to ensure that you wear properly fitted clothes. Fitting clothes does not mean suffocating in a slim fit if you are oversized. It simply means wearing what works for you that allows you to breathe without you getting lost in what you wear.

An extra pointer for a casual look for men.

When putting together casual looks it is important that you pull off that cool, easy vibe without veering into looking sloppy or disheveled. Your objective is to look sleek and polished but relaxed and ready for anything. Go for a nice fitted tee in an upscale fabric. There are many options here; either crew neck or v-neck, short sleeved or long, fit and fabric choice are key. Paired with a slim fitting pair of black jeans, sexy black leather jacket and a nice, sleek shoe and you’re good to go!

What to wear to weddings

When was the last time you attended a wedding?

For me that would be two years ago. It was amazing. The pop of colours, the foods, the decorations ,a sight for sore eyes. I don’t know how they do it. The wedding planners of course.

Weddings help families meet and catch up. With this in mind you wouldn’t want your cousin seeing you in that short and tight skirt you can barely walk in or that bra that barely fits you hence you keep adjusting.

It’s a wedding. The date of the wedding is usually set way early so you have all the time to come up with a nice outfit.

What factors do you consider while picking the outfit ?

1. Role you are playing

In my case i was a bride’s maid i already had an outfit to wear. The role you are playing highly depends with the relationship between you and the couple. Probably you already knew that.

If you are the bride of honour well much is expected from you. Wear something elegant, something beautiful ,preferably a dress with any of the shades of champagne is perfect.

Same case applies if you are the best man. Pay attention to every detail about your grooming. Have a hair cut, trim your beards, make sure your shoes are clean, the nitty gritty aspects matter.

2. Comfort

Your comfort comes first. Wear something that you can dance with. If need be carry an extra pair of flat shoes.

I forgot to carry an extra pair. By the end of the day my legs were aching so bad i had to get flats on my way home. All this happened because i was stubborn and kept telling my friends that i can wear heels comfortably no wonder the situation. I learnt my lesson the hard way. Don’t make the same mistake.

3. The current weather.

This is crucial unless you are the freeze and shine type. Wearing something warm and cozy doesn’t have to be boring. Learn the art of layering. Spice up your look . Mix different shades of colors. Forget about the fashion rules. Be as creative and as authentic as you can be.

Remember it’s your outfit. Own it.

Carry an extra coat incase the weather decides to switch up on you. It also comes in handy since most weddings last a whole day.

4. The wedding’s dress code.

Some couples may have a dress code for their wedding. It is important you adhere to that. Most couples however let you decide what you want to wear which is amazing and gives you no limitation. You can choose to go all wild or calm with this. It all depends on you.

Some of the common dressing codes include black tie, white tie, beach formal, casual, cocktail attire and formal tie, just to mention but a few.

Dress codes make an event stylish, uniform and fancy.

5. Wear something fun

I had this habit a few years ago (just between us I still do it sometimes) that I’d dress according to how i feel. Dull colors when I’m low, bright colours when I’m happy. So what would happen if my morning was awful but my day was turning out better?Story for another day.

Weddings are fun. Giving you reason to wear bright colors that vibrate your mood and the wedding’s vibe.

6. If in doubt wear ankara.

If in doubt wear Ankara. Nothing says happy, living in the moment, I’m glad to be here,I’m stylish and proud of my African ancestry like a good Ankara piece could be a dress, skirt or shirt.

I know Ankaras are not cheap. Invest in good quality. Go for quality over quantity. Buy a piece at a time and in no time your closet will be full.

7. Stick to your style

I highly advise against trying something new at this occasion. Stick to your personal style. Trying something new has it’s risks. Risks that may turn disastrous. At the same time maybe this new style is what you are missing out on.

Are you in a dilemma now?Weigh your choices.

Next time you are invited to a wedding put into consideration the above tips and you’ll come up with a bomb outfit no kidding.

How to create your signature look- women

What is a signature look and how important is it?

A signature look is the outfit people picture you wearing when they think of you . It is an extension of your personality and introduces you before you speak . It can be used for self empowerment since clothing has been proven to have an effect on ones mood and confidence.

A signature look does not necessarily have to boring ,it should have room for dynamicity . You can have several signature looks too.

Just like many style icons ,for you to come up with a signature look you need to be self aware . You need to know what works for you and what does not .

Here are a few tips you should follow before coming up with a signature look.

#1 .What you are comfortable with.

Make sure you are comfortable with the look you choose . Pick items from your closet that you feel most comfortable in ,they are potentials for your signature look.

#2. Have your job in mind.

As much as comfort is key ,make sure your ultimate look is in line with your work . Some companies have uniforms or strict dressing codes . In this case your hands are tied .

If not you can play around with any pieces you want .

#3. Current trends

As much as trends don’t always stick around for long, you can borrow a thing or two from them . Make sure you use trends to enhance your style .It’s not until you’ve tried them on that you’ll know what works for you and what does not .

# 4. Items that you wear the most

What piece from your closet do you wear most ? Chances are that you already have a signature you just don’t know it yet .Pick out these pieces to clearly identify your personal style.

# 5. Items you rarely wear

They are a clear example of what does not work for you . Do a closet purging on these items and make sure they aren’t on your shopping list next time . This helps declutter your closet and reduces chances of you impulse buying items you don’t require.

# 6. The shape of your body

It is important to keep this in mind especially if you have a style icon you would like to copy . Just because it looks good on them does not mean it’ll look good on you, that’s the sad truth .

Identifying your style will help you in so many ways . It’ll make choosing an outfit so much easier. Pick a look that oozes individuality and creativity.

“Just remember that ultimately ,dressing is always about attitude ,feeling comfortable and confidence.” Kate Moss.

How to dress according to your skin tone

………………………………………………………..

What is your skin tone? Warm ,cool or neutral .

If you would have asked me the same question a month ago i’d be like ,” I’m chocolate or dark brown if you prefer that” I know ,I know . Right now i can confidently say that i have a warm skin tone .

First things first let’s have a look at how we can determine skin tone .

No special equipment is required . Check your veins under a natural light. What is the color of your veins under your skin?If they are blue or purple you have a cool skin tone. Celebrities with cool skin tones include Lupita Nyong’o and Lucy Liu . If they are green or greenish blue you have a warm skin tone .Celebrities with warm skin tones include Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez.

If you are unable to tell what colour your veins are ,you have a neutral skin tone. Celebrities with the same include Angeline Jolie and Kerry Washington. The reason I’ve included celebrities with what skin tone is to help remind you what colours can look good on you too .

Just between you and me ,this is one way professional stylists use to determine which colour best suits you along with your budget, the occasion you are dressing for, shape of your body and your preference.

While black is a good color and a majority’s comfort zone when it comes to dressing ,the rest of the colours can be good too after figuring out your skin tone . The colours I’m about to mention are not for women alone , the males can try them too .

Warm skin tone

Colours that look good on you include orange, red, green ,purple ,blue ,latte, creamy white, amber and golden yellow .

Colours to avoid include the icy shades( brighter or softer shades of colors) ,sapphire and ruby.

Cool skin tone

Colours that complement your tone include lilac, deep purple ,ruby,Sapphire ,royal blue, bright blue white and grey.

Colours to avoid include yellow and orange .

Neutral skin tone

Colours that look good with you include neutral colours or neutral shades of colours to be specific for example soft pink , vanilla (at first i didn’t know it was a colour. Apparently its a shade of white. )and grey.

Colours to avoid include reds and yellows or anything too bright .

Knowing your skin tone , what colours look good on you and what colours do not will help you while shopping in determining which colours to stock up more .

The above colours are not written on stone . Wearing a colour you should avoid will not get you in any trouble ( the fashion police would have been on your neck though ,if you were a celebrity) .

Ever seen how effortlessly some celebrities pull off bold colours and wondered what the secret to that is ? Well now you know. Don’t be in a hurry to pair pink and yellow though . Start small ,take baby steps the colors will fall in place eventually.

Knowing your skin tone won’t just help you with dressing alone but with picking the right foundation too.

Take is one step to knowing yourself.

THE CORSET AND BIKER SHORT TREND

Originally the corset was worn as an undergarment . Lately well it’s more stylish when layered with other pieces ( layering is basically my weakness .I don’t know maybe it’s because i prefer summer to cold seasons. )

This is the layering season . You can finally get creative with your clothes to come up with a stylish yet warm outfit .

The corset and biker short has been a trend for sometime now and is perfect for casual hangouts.

I love how the corset is tight at the waist area making it even more feminine . It ensures your curves are in place.

If you don’t mind you can wear it vice versa ,the corset as a top then the white shirt as a kimono . It’ll still be a bomb outfit.

I like how this outfit is decent yet stylish at the same time . Most parts of your body are covered hence less insecurities .

For the shoes i went for something simple . I didn’t want them attracting any attention since the corset is already doing that .

Be sure to tell me how your corset and biker short outfit turns out.

3 ways on how to style biker shorts

So biker shorts are back with a bang. Okay they have been for a while now. I’m not one to go with trends but damn i had to try this one out and i must say ,I’m not disappointed 😊. Thing about fashion and life at large is that you must be willing to learn . Have an open mind .

I mean what’s not to like about biker shorts. They are comfortable and can be worn say while running errands ,workouts or even grabbing brunch.

And now without much ado ,

The first way of styling biker shorts.

First impression

Reserved

Stylish

Athletic

You could pair your biker short with an oversized shirt. The belt creates curves (whether you have them or nah) making it more feminine. It all gets down to what you’re comfortable in ,what parts of your body you’re most confident about and your specific way of dressing.

I remember getting this specific shirt because of it’s color . I didn’t know exactly what I’d pair it with at the moment but i liked it none the less so i bought it . I fitted it afterwards then decided to pair it with the white biker short and bam 😊, i loved the outcome .

Okay i could talk about this outfit all day so let’s just get to the second way of styling biker shorts.💜

I love the vibe of this outfit no kidding . It has that casual official touch and the shoes😍😍 idk about you but i like like. If that’s even grammatical .😂

Okay let’s talk about the outfit.

First impression

Bossy

Outgoing

So originally i saw this idea on Pinterest and decided to try it. The blazer makes it official and helps cover up most part of the thorax.

The shoes makes the outfit even more stylish. I also love how the bag complements the outfit ,in its own way it stands out since the rest are black and white😊.

Now onto the last way(for now) of styling biker shorts.

I chose an oversized shirt and a corset top. It’s almost like the first way just made a few changes. Corset tops have become a thing for a while now and I’m happy how i get to play around with them .

Out of the three i definitely loved this outfit most .

Be sure to tell me your preferred outfit 1,2 or 3 in the comment section below.😊😊

AN IDEAL AFRICAN WOMAN👑

…………………………………………………………..

So who exactly is an ideal African woman? What does society expect from her? How is she evolving? Is the evolution in her favor? Given a choice would you rather the African woman or the modern woman? What are the challenges she faces?

What’s the first image that comes in mind about your ideal African woman definition. No wait let me go first , definitely someone in an Ankara, outspoken about her beliefs, a firm believer of a higher being,a mother,a wife,a submissive, loving ,caring ,hardworking female with a nurturing soul, strict about taboos and so forth. I could go on and on and on and on but you get the picture right?

Over time the African woman has evolved tremendously. A gender that was viewed as inferior has fought hard for their rights . Gender discrimination, domestic violence, early marriage, female genital mutilation, wife inheritance …although this acts have not been done away with completely ,we can agree that a significant difference has been made.

It’s time we respected the modern woman’s decisions . The modern woman has adapted a new way of living generally . She is slowly doing away with her roots . She wants her skin bleached, she wants her gender ” replaced”,she does not want to have children till she’s done with her studies or not at all ,she wants to get rich quick and at any cost ,she wants a big a** and a tiny waist . She wants so much more than was earlier offered to her. She is ambitious .She is intelligent . She is a go getter.

We may not agree with half of her opinions and that’s completely okay.

We need not be violent about it whatsoever.

She has done so much to be where she is now. Cut her some slack .

People are resistant to change but that doesn’t stop it from happening . The African woman is metamorphosizing .She is transitioning 🙂

Special thanks to my best friend Beverlyne Ong’enge❤❤❤

50 SHADES OF GREY💜

………………………………………………………………

This is what we are talking about😊

Well this is my first mono chromic look so excuse me but I’m new to this 😂. Anyway wanna know some facts about gray?Yeah i promise they wont be boring.

Well gray(American English ) or grey(British English ) whichever you prefer is an intermediate colour between white and black.

It’s a colour without colour. Lighter shades are feminine while darker shades are more masculine .

So what does the colour grey symbolize about ones personality?

Chill, cool, depressing, conservative, formal, dull, moody and emotionless . It’s more like black but lacks the intense negativity .

Did you know there are 256 shades of gray? 256. Damn that’s a lot.

Let’s assume this is a pose and i wasn’t falling😅

NB:Wearing grey doesn’t really mean your are feeling dull, moody, depressed or any of the words i mentioned above.

What is the one thing that keeps your spirit jolly even when the mood shouldn’t? For me it’s playing dress up.

Why i chose this outfit? Well it’s comfortable ,warm ,stylish and i love the colour grey.

The next time you want to look stylish either indoors or outdoors ,pick items of the same colour from your closet and try pairing them . Tell me how it goes.

So what will be my next mono chromic look ? Hang around to find out.

How to dress like a model

FIRST IMPRESSION

………………………………………………………………

What’s the first thing that comes in mind when you’re told ,”she’s/he’s a model”?

Lemme guess she/he doesn’t feed properly, has so many clothes , gets to travel around the world ,maybe survives on one meal a day. Has a boss that tells her/him what to wear, when, how to eat ,when to breath etc. Probably even looks malnourished.( I’m guessing it’s because plus size models are not as popular.)

Well it’s not all bad. You wouldn’t understand because its not your line of work and again don’t judge .

I don’t know how they pull it off,the walk ,the sway, the twirl, the piroutte ,every movement in synchrony…a complete masterpiece if you ask me . Pure art. That aside😂

Do you want to pull off the “all eyes on me outfit”?The outfit that will get everyone questioning if you are a model ,designer or stylist.

Well confidence is key and believe you me every one around you feels the vibe. Don’t be afraid to go bold if you want ,if you’re uncertain go for dull colours. Like i did .

Be prepared to go all out . Own it .

Well fitting clothes work the magic here . It could be a body con dress or skirt ,make sure your hair is done and lastly grab a pair of heels . Walk straight like the streets are your runway .

Make sure “too much isn’t going on” . Go for plain colours .

People may have gotten used to how you dress, why not switch things a little .A day won’t hurt right?Try wearing that bold outfit that you’ve always wanted to but afraid that “people will stare “.
